Chiaroscuro:

chi·a·ro·scu·ro
kēˌärəˈsk(y)o͝orō,kēˌarə-/
noun
  1. the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting.
    • an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something.

In music, this word takes on an entirely new dimension, giving the listener a sense of synesthesia, allowing them to hear light and darkness, providing depth and warmth and life. I cannot pretend to know the life of a composer, the creative process from thought to paper to performance, but I do quite admire it. There is such a dedication to artistry, a willingness to bear one's soul through the medium of sound, and a vulnerability. I love listening and knowing that each new work brings an honest interpretation of the human experience. I am by no means a composer, but Thomas, here, has a passion and a gift for writing beautiful music. My goal for this shoot was to capture the beauty of the creative process. I highly suggest you attend his Composition Recital coming up this semester to witness the product of his hard work.
