A Bug's Life

I would definitely not describe myself as a "bug lover." However, I do feel this strange draw toward the beautiful and intricate designs of some insects, whose forms seem so foreign at times. The scariest part of capturing these beauties, however, is that I usually have to get within a very close proximity in order to catch these little creatures that usually fly under the radar. (pun intended) For most of these shots I used my telephoto lens, which allows me to stand a safe-ish distance away from the insect, especially the spiders, but in some cases all I have is my wide angle. I find that sometimes my favorites are of the scary ones, like the spiders and the wasp, because I would NEVER normally take the time to look at those insects closely for very long in person. However, from the safety of my computer screen, I can enjoy their intricacies and beauty without facing the irrational fear that it will jump onto my face and eat me (please tell me I'm not the only one)...

It's amazing how many of these were taken in my backyard or very close to home. It makes me marvel at the fact that beauty is all around us. NOTHING is ordinary and nothing should be taken for granted. How incredible and how beautiful is our world, staring us right in the face, and yet most days I walk right past it unknowingly. These shots not only inspire me to appreciate nature, but also to walk a little slower and look a little closer to maybe catch a glimpse into a hidden world among us.
